Any instrument or voice that can produce a sustained single pitch can work, including guitar, bass, ukulele, violin, viola, cello, winds, brass, and keys.
A cent is one hundredth of a semitone. Negative values mean the note is flat, positive values mean it is sharp, and 0 cents is in tune.
The tuner uses sharp names for the five black-key pitches. These are enharmonic equivalents, so C# is the same sounding pitch as Db, for example.
