Low-note tracking

Help the tuner hear the low B

Very low fundamentals are easier to read when the signal is clean and the overtones are controlled.

1

Mute unused strings

Rest your hands on the other four strings so sympathetic vibration does not pull the detector toward another note.

2

Use a gentle pluck

Pluck near the neck with moderate force. A hard attack creates extra overtones and a brief sharp pitch.

3

Wait for the sustain

Adjust after the attack fades and the displayed note becomes stable, especially on B0 and E1.

Tuning workflow

How to tune a 5-string bass

Work from the low B upward, then repeat the full pass after the neck tension settles.

  1. 1

Tap the microphone button and allow browser microphone access.

  2. 2

Pluck the low B string by itself and tune slowly toward B0.

  3. 3

Continue through E1, A1, D2, and G2, muting every string except the one being checked.

  4. 4

If the low note jumps by an octave, keep the correct string target selected and let the clean sustain ring.

  5. 5

Recheck B E A D G from low to high after the first pass.

5-string bass FAQ

Common five-string tuning questions

The extra low string changes the range, while the upper four strings remain familiar.

What is standard tuning for a 5-string bass?

Standard five-string bass tuning is B0 E1 A1 D2 G2 from low to high. It adds a low B below four-string E A D G tuning.

Why is the low B harder to detect?

B0 is only 30.87 Hz, and small microphones may capture its overtones more strongly than its fundamental. Mute the other strings and wait for the note to settle.

Can I use a four-string bass tuner for five strings?

It can tune E A D G, but it does not provide a dedicated B0 target. This page includes all five targets and the correct octave for the low B.
